Dirty Dancing is to get a 21st century remake, it has been revealed.

The hit 1980s film will be brought to life for a new generation by Lionsgate, with High School Musical choreographer Kenny Ortega to organise all the dance moves.

It is not yet known who will play lead characters Johnny Castle and Frances 'Baby' Houseman, who were portrayed so memorably by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the 1987 original.

"The opportunity to direct Dirty Dancing is like returning home for me," Ortega told Variety.

Dirty Dancing tells the story of teenager Baby, who goes on what she expects to be a boring holiday with her family.

However, her summer changes completely when she meets charismatic dance teacher Johnny.

Not only was the film a huge success, it also spawned a West End musical that recently completed a five-year run in London and is now about to go on tour.
