A motorist's attempt at avoiding a £2 parking fee left his vehicle in deep water - literally.

The unnamed driver had taken to leaving his car on Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard while he commuted to work, possibly in London.

However, instead of using the specially-designated car park at one end of the dock, he cheekily avoided having to pay and display by putting the Alfa Romeo on a slipway.

It was bound to end in tears sooner or later and it did last week, when the tide came in.

Police and fisherman could only watch as the water engulfed the flashy-looking sports car, eventually sweeping it away completely.

They eventually managed to get in touch with a relative of the man, who was left to break the news about his pride and joy.

However, fisherman pointed out that the slipway was clearly marked as an area to unload and reload cargo only, so they no doubt think he got his comeuppance.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is the home of the Royal Navy and visitors can explore HMS Victory, which is moored there.
