A big-hearted teenager has shunned the opportunity of wearing a ballgown to her school leavers' prom in favour of superhero fancy dress.
Jessica Pye, 16, will head to the St Robert of Newminster RC School prom this week in a Supergirl fancy dress outfit instead of a flowing frock in a bid to raise money for Help the Heroes.
She told the Sunderland Echo that she came up with the idea after seeing injured soldiers on the news and wanting to help, but acknowledging that she "just cannot run", ruling out sponsored marathons and the like.
Jessica chose Supergirl to represent the heroic efforts of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I just thought really a prom is not that big a deal and realised I could use it to raise some money," she explained.
What a great idea - this idea could be used for all kinds of charities too! How about a Danger Mouse costume to raise funds to prevent cruelty to animals?
