Fans of children's programmes Rainbow and Doctor Who are sure to be saddened by the news that voice actor Roy Skelton has passed away.

His daughter Samantha spoke about to Mr Skelton, who alternated between delighting youngsters as the zip-mouthed puppet Zippy and then terrifying them as Doctor Who's biggest foes.

"People who knew he did the voices would ask him to do them and he would. He didn't need any sound equipment," she commented.

Among the celebrities to pay tribute to the actor was Chris Moyles, who told listeners about Mr Skelton's death on his BBC Radio 1 show.

Saying he was saddened by the news, the DJ added that he was one of the youngsters who has vivid childhood television memories of enjoying the characters he created.

Rainbow was originally screened as a British Sesame Street and ran for more than 1,000 episodes.
