An American man has taken home the coveted title of world's best beard after taking part in the 2011 World Beard and Moustache Championships in Norway.

Burke Kenny, 26, comes from Olympia in Washington state and has been growing his facial hair since he was about 20 years old.

He entered the competition in the "full beard with styled moustache" category, but also won first place overall thanks to his impressively hairy face.

It is not the first time Burke has achieved this honour though, as he also walked away with first place four years ago when the championships were held in England.

"I like to be an honorable gentleman and present myself honorably," he commented, naming his moustachioed father as his number one inspiration.

Burke revealed that while he likes having his huge beard, it can also cause some problems. For example, he has to remind people talking to him to look at his eyes and not his chin, he avoids sauces at all costs and names windy weather as his number one enemy.

Of course, there are also lots of drunken comparisons to ZZ Top to contend with too - and Burke also confided that the world of competitive bearding is not all that pally.

"There's a lot of drama and a lot of big egos," he commented, adding of his fellow competitors: "They're out to get me, for sure."

Despite this, Burke said he would encourage anyone who can to "grow quality facial hair" and "wear it humbly".

The BBC's H2G2 website recommends letting a beard grow for four solid weeks before beginning to trim it, as the average beard grows five inches a year. However, it warned that it will be able to itch quite a lot in the second or third week, so a conditioner might be worth investing in.

Or you could just wear a fancy dress one.
