Sad news for movie fans today - Batman actor Michael Gough has passed away at the age of 94.

The veteran actor, who is perhaps best known for playing Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred Pennyworth, had been ill for the past year and died at home surrounded by his closest family.

He had appeared in the Batman films since 1989, starring alongside actors including George Clooney in the lead role.

However, superhero aficionados may not be aware that he had worked with director Tim Burton in Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland and in the cult Hammer Horror films in the 1960s.

Gough can also be seen in two Doctor Who episodes, one in 1965 and the other in the 1980s.

"We've lost a very treasured and beloved friend and somebody who made a magnificent contribution to the world of theatre and films," said Gough's agent.

The actor was born in Kuala Lumpur and is survived by his fourth wife, one daughter and two sons.
