Partygoers may be inspired to try a pirate fancy dress costume after seeing the outfits worn at a summer fete in County Durham.
Dozens of people entered the fancy dress contest at the Greatham Feast near Hartlepool last weekend and several swashbuckling pirates were among the crowd, the Hartlepool Mail reports.
Other imaginative costumes on show at the event included a giant sunflower, Pinocchio and members of the A-Team.
However, local residents Brian Walker and Dorothy Clark proved that cartoon fancy dress always goes down well by winning the overall prize with their Popeye and Olive Oyl costumes.
"It was fabulous and the weather was glorious," Mr Walker told the newspaper.
"Apart from England losing to Germany, it was a perfect weekend," he added.
Barnardo's recently announced that pirates will provide the theme for its Big Toddle fundraising event, which aims to raise money for children under five through short sponsored walks.
