A swashbuckling team of people from Devon - including some who donned Jack Sparrow fancy dress - have managed to smash a Guinness World Record thanks to a pirate-themed event that took place over the bank holiday.

More than 1,700 men, women and children gathered in Brixham to try and take the title of the biggest ever gathering of pirates, which was previously held by Portland in the US.

And thanks to an array of eye patches, wooden legs and parrots, they beat the record by almost 250.

"I am thrilled the town has beaten the record. Everywhere you went there were pirates. We feel wonderful," Karen Barnes, one of the motley crew, told the Times.

It was recently reported that a hospice home in Buckinghamshire intends to perform a conga line while in fancy dress costumes in order to raise money for its patients, the Bucks Free Press reported.

If you want an adult fancy dress outfit, you can't go wrong with pirates fancy dress.

Just don't forget to put on your best Jack Sparrow swagger.
